Musician’s Lectionary

Below you will find a year’s worth of scriptural readings organized to show something of the story of music in the Bible. There is a reading for every week of the year. The readings might be particularly edifying if read on Sunday or Monday as you prepare for the work of the week ahead. You might also view these weekly readings as an invitation to pray for other musicians in their places of service.

The readings have been chosen for a variety of reasons. We have attempted to include passages from a large number of books. Thirty-seven books have been included representing both the Old and New Testaments. Many passages describe events that included music. Others feature musical language. Still others are song texts. The readings for the month of December have all come to be known as song texts, whether or not they were originally sung.

This lectionary can be used in any year. The four readings at the end should be inserted during the week that begins with Palm Sunday, during the week that begins with Easter, then just before and after Thanksgiving respectively. It is our prayer that the discipline of this lectionary will lead us all to deeper levels of Spirit-filled musicianship and fellowship.
